Studio 308

North Adams, MA

Abstract drawing of a forest by the artist Douglas Gilbert.

LAPINcontemporary is pleased to present a second solo exhibition of new works by Douglas Gilbert, at its 60 Roberts Drive, studio 308 gallery, in North Adams, MA, at Norad Mill.

On view from July 12 to September 28, Douglas Gilbert: Gradient, will focus on the intricacy and depth of natural scenery, using a myriad of fine intersecting lines.  The artist's skillful use of line to create texture and form is a significant characteristic of his work.  The sense of movement and the interplay of light and shadow are skillfully executed, revealing a deep understanding of how minimalistic elements can create a powerful visual impact.  The blending of lines generates a rhythmic pattern that contributes to the overall harmony of the composition.  Douglas Gilbert’s work exudes an enigmatic and contemplative atmosphere, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the intricate web of lines and to interpret its deeper meanings personally.

The show will present large and small scale works on paper, made with graphite and charcoal.  The artist exhibits a remarkable consistency in style, characterized by his use of densely packed lines to create gradients and shapes, that culminate in a dramatic series of minimalist, monumental and abstract works.

Douglas Gilbert (b.1967, NYC, New York) started his art education at LaGuardia School of the Arts in New York.  Later, he received his B.F.A. and B.A. in Art History from Cornell University.  He currently lives and works in the Berkshires, Massachusetts.

Fascinated by computer graphics, Douglas spent much of his young career as a graphic designer.  His decision to return to fine art and specifically pencil to paper speaks to his desire to bring attention to the medium’s relevance in today’s shiny technology filled galleries.  He exhibited at UCLA Broad Art Center, Becket Art Center, Lapin Contemporary, and the Spencertown Academy Art Center.  Douglas Gilbert’s work is collected nationally and internationally.

Douglas Gilbert has taught computer graphics and drawing at LaGuardia School of the Arts, Evander Childs High School, University of Southern California, American Intercontinental University, and Queensborough Community College.  He teaches drawing at his studio in North Adams, MA.

LAPINcontemporary is an emerging gallery focused on exhibiting works of art throughout the year with the intention to promote artists and to provide another cultural venue for the community, and for visitors travelling on the path between The Clark Art Institute and Mass MoCA.
